Empowering Rural Farmers for Sustainable Development, Karbi Anglong

About

The Azim Premji Foundation-supported project, “Empowering Rural Farmers for Sustainable Development,” was launched in February 2025 with the aim of enhancing the income of small and marginal farmers in five villages of Chinthong Block, West Karbi Anglong district, Assam. The project focuses on sustainable livelihood promotion through vegetable cultivation, improved livestock management, and adoption of better agricultural practices in areca nut and pineapple farming. Key interventions include the promotion of Nutri-gardens among approximately 320 households, improved piggery practices among around 220 existing pig-rearing households, and enhanced farming methods for areca nut and pineapple cultivation among nearly 100 households. In addition, the project seeks to facilitate access to various government welfare schemes and entitlements for all 500 households in the target area.

During the initial two months, a comprehensive household-level survey was conducted across the five project villages. The survey covered 500 households, helping to identify and shortlist 320 core beneficiary households based on set criteria. This beneficiary finalization process was completed by the end of March 2025.

An orientation programme for the selected core beneficiaries is planned for April 2025 to introduce them to the project’s objectives, implementation plan, and roles. Following the orientation, the actual implementation of activities—including distribution of inputs, training, and field demonstrations—will commence. This integrated and participatory approach aims to improve agricultural productivity, household nutrition, and rural income while fostering community empowerment and sustainable development in the region.
