Helping to Increase Rural Literacy in Assam (HIRLA)

About

The Association for International and Intercultural Exchange (AIE), Germany, in partnership with Bosco Reach Out (BRO), Guwahati, has been supporting underprivileged students through the “Help to Increase Rural Literacy in Assam (HIRLA)” programme. The word ‘HIRLA’ is derived from Santali language meaning ‘helping hand’.  This project targets students from CARE schools located in remote areas of Kokrajhar district. Selected students are admitted to nearby English medium schools and also to Don Bosco School, Amguri, which offers boarding facilities under the Bridging Course Programme. The main objective of the HIRLA programme is to empower deprived communities in Lower Assam, particularly poor tribal families, by enabling access to quality primary and higher education. This initiative is vital for families who are unable to afford English medium schooling for their children. Currently, 87 students from CARE schools have received admission into five feeder schools (Classes KG–V), while 36 students were directly enrolled at Don Bosco School, Amguri (Classes KG–X/XII). Additionally, 13 students from Assamese-medium backgrounds have joined Don Bosco, Amguri, under the Bridging Course and will continue their studies up to Class X/XII.

These scholarships have significantly increased the enrollment of children from Santal and Adivasi (Kuruk) communities at Don Bosco School, Amguri, contributing to the region’s socio-economic development. Over the past three years, 136 families from Lungsung, Saralpara, and Amguri have benefited from this programme. The families express deep gratitude to BRO and AIE, Germany, for their unwavering support and generosity in uplifting the lives of underprivileged children through education.
