Reduction of Avoidable Blindness among Children and Youth

About

The project “Reduction of Avoidable Blindness among Children and Youth through Comprehensive Eye Care Programme in Assam” from November 2023 to December 2024 was successfully implemented with the support of Don Bosco Mission Bonn, Germany. The project complemented the Government of Assam’s efforts under the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) by addressing preventable and treatable eye conditions, particularly among children and youth.

Implemented across Morigaon, Goalpara, and Kamrup Metro districts, the project focused on early detection and treatment of avoidable blindness, including trachoma, river blindness, and cataract. Eye camps were organized in collaboration with the 200-Bedded District Civil Hospital, Goalpara, and the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Guwahati. Medical teams conducted vision screening, prescribed treatment, and distributed free medicines. Selected patients underwent group counselling and received free diagnostic tests—RBS, urine, and BP—at the base hospital before undergoing cataract surgery. Out of 5,763 individuals screened (3,713 from the community and 2,050 school children), 555 were identified with cataracts and referred for surgery. Of these, 427 were hospitalized, and 405 successfully underwent cataract operations. The remaining 22 patients received glasses and treatment for other eye conditions. To ensure accessibility, Bosco Reach Out arranged free transportation and continuous counselling for hesitant patients. Post-surgery, most patients experienced marked improvement in vision, resulting in enhanced quality of life and personal satisfaction. The project demonstrated a strong community impact and reaffirmed the commitment to reducing avoidable blindness in rural Assam.
