1. CHILDREN SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMME
Children Sponsorship Programme has enabled more than 5000 of the most vulnerable poor children from Assam and Meghalaya to pursue their schooling since 1999. The organisation works towards the integral growth of the children, nurturing their innate talents in their native land while equipping them with sufficient knowledge to become self-supporting and improve their living conditions. The initiative has enlightened parents and communities about leading meaningful lives through promoting education at primary, secondary, and higher levels of technical education. Thousands of underprivileged children have completed their studies and now hold well-paying jobs.
2. AFTER SCHOOL COACHING
After School Coaching Programme aimed to provide students with two hours of coaching every evening in core subjects of Maths, Science and English so that they pass their annual examination and get promoted to the next class. The targeted students were from local Government schools. The centres have poor people who cannot afford extra tuition for the children. The Centres include Doomni, Damra, Gojapara, Haflong-Umrangso, Joropara and Diphu. The programme also helped to reduce the number of students who failed their HSLC examination.
3. CHILDREN AT RISK EDUCATION
The ‘Children at Risk Education (CARE) project’ is implemented to bring about equal opportunities for deprived and underprivileged children in the education sector by promoting and fostering the Right to Education. The students of CARE schools are mainstreamed into existing government schools and other schools after completing their 5thStandard in the locality. In the project areas, the Cluster Coordinators continuously monitor and follow up with the students to prevent dropouts.
4. CONSTRUCTION OF DON BOSCO DEGREE COLLEGE IN DIPHU, KARBIANGLONG
The ‘Construction of Don Bosco Degree College – Diphu, KarbiAnglong, India’ aims to provide the youth with access to quality education in comprehensive degree courses through a well-equipped and functioning Degree College, ensuring that the most deprived individuals have the opportunity for deserving placement services in KarbiAnglong district of Assam, North East India. This initiative has also contributed to improving the overall educational status in the region. It is expected that 550 students will enrol in bachelor’s courses under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) in all three streams of studies, namely, Arts and Humanities, Commerce, and Science. Each year, 200 students will complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Humanities (B.A.), 200 students will complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (B.Com.), and 150 students will complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). The construction of Don Bosco Degree College at Diphu is progressing well.
5. EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT OF MARGINALIZED CHILDREN THROUGH EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS
The special programme ‘Educational empowerment of marginalised children through education scholarships’ helped 16 girl children aged between 6-14 years who are parentless and from socio-economically marginalised households. The scholarship helps them to clear their school fees. The scholarship benefitted five girl children from Baithalangso, KarbiAnglong district of Assam, five girl children from Dotma, Kokrajhar district of Assam, and five girl children from Garobadha, West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
6. SETTING UP OF COMPUTER LABS IN DON BOSCO SCHOOLS
The programme, setting up of a computer lab, has reached out to rural school children to provide more facilities for digital education. Given the urgency for children, a computer lab was set up with 20 computers at Don Bosco School Amkachi in West KarbiAnglong district and 22 computers at Don Bosco School Malivita in Chirang district. Every day more than 870 students attend their computer practical classes.
7. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME AT AMGURI SCHOOL
The programme provides scholarships to poor students of the Children at Risk Education (CARE) project aimed to offer quality primary and higher education to the children and grant access to higher education, especially for children from poor tribal families of Santhali and Adivasi communities. These students are admitted to English Medium Schools close to their villages. The target groups are those living in remote areas of Kokrajhar district in Assam. Educating these children would bring socio-economic development to the area and transform lives. The scholarship programme is awarded to children from families with less than Rs.20,000 annual income, malnourished families, families of daily labourers who have no access to school, and it gives more priority to Adivasi and Santhali communities, while a few students come from Bodo communities.
8. SETTING UP OF COMPUTERS IN REMEDIAL EDUCATION CENTRES OF ASSAM
Bosco Reach Out intends to provide computer literacy to the marginalised children of rural areas by establishing remedial education centres at its Don Bosco Schools in Umrangso – Dima Hasao district, Amguri – Kokrajhar district, and Ouguri – Chirang district of Assam. Thus, they will be at par with their peers in learning. Remedial Education Centres in Don Bosco Umrangso, Don Bosco Amguri, and Don Bosco Ouguri have been set up with four sets of computers, projector and screen, and 4G hotspot router each.
9. DELIVERING SMILES
